TRAIL RIDES

If riding the trails on an OHV is not your style, maybe you'll enjoy riding one of the many horses at Pioneer Stables (928-428-7441). Pioneer Stables is open year-round and offers several different Adventure Trail rides.

Beautiful scenery around Safford.

Whether you’re big or small, young or old, a beginning or a seasoned rider, they have plenty to offer. All you have to worry about is how long you want to be out, from an hour to all-day sessions.

Their Cowboy Dinner ride offers a full evening of activities, including: a romantic sunset ride, steak dinner cooked over a campfire, and Cowboy story telling.

More Western Lore

The Great Wham Paymaster Robbery history tour highlights the ambush in 1889 of a US Army Paymaster (Major Wham, as in Bomb) and his Buffalo Soldier guards. An hour-and-a-half firefight couldn’t stop the end result, the loss of almost $28,000 in gold and silver coins. Seven local ranchers were arrested almost immediately, tried, and found innocent. The money was never recovered.

The Fort Grant to Camp Thomas Road history tour follows the 1881 escape and flight of Geronimo, his chiefs and their families, and many Apache warriors. US Troopers followed only hours behind them. You will visit the battle scene when they were overtaken and learn many bizarre facts about this famous time.
